When I asked a friend from Kauai, “Where do you recommend snorkeling on Kauai?”, He told me, “If this is your first time to go to Kauai, Poipu Beach is a good snorkeling spot.”
So I decided to go there with my friend.
How to get to Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach is a small beach south of Koloa, a small town on Kauai.
It takes about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Lihue Airport.
You can get to the beach by following below
- Drive on Kaumualii Hwy to the west
- Take a left turn to Maluhia Rd
- Pass through Koloa town
- Drive on Poipu Rd to the south
- Arrive at Poipu Beach
While driving on the road called Maluhia Rd, you will go through a wooden tunnel 🙂
There is a supermarket in Koloa, just before the beach, so I think it’s a good idea to buy food there.
The town of Koloa itself is also pretty.
This is Poipu beach.
It is characterized by a sandy beach that protrudes about 200 feet from the center of the beach, probably due to the influence of the current of the waves.

Snorkeling
The water was very clear. It actually looked clearer than it looks in these pictures.
It may be affected by the seasons and weather, but it was the clearest water I have ever snorkeled in Hawaii.
In particular, it is rare that it is so transparent in shallow water that you can stand on your feet. Even fish far away look really beautiful.
In the first place, the amount of fish was outstanding.
There were a lot of colorful and cute fish.
You can see a lot of fish just 10 feet from the land, so even those who are not good at swimming and children can enjoy it.
This school of fish was also seen at a depth of 3 feet!
The fact that the seabed is made of coral or stone instead of sand may be the reason why the water is so transparent.
I didn’t see it when I went, but Hawaiian Monk Seals sometimes come to take a break.
Rest assured that there are showers and toilets on the beach.
